The position of design director is to clearly define and lead the studio’s commercial workplace interior design studio offering and combining with their architecture studios.

JOB SUMMARY:

The position of design director is to clearly define and lead the studios commercial workplace interior design studio offering and combining with their architecture studios. The design director will have responsibility for the P+L reporting into the managing director. The studio currently has a dedicated mixed team of 12 architects and interior designers focused on commercial workplace interiors.

Projects are across the UK, Europe and with Tier 1 clients, developers and end-users and are a mix of CAT A/B. The studio currently has a successful team and a legacy of work with corporate clients in finance, legal and tech. This role is to replace a member of the leadership team.

TASKS:

Business Development:

The design director will be proactive with business development and the role will have other sector directors and a head of communications to support with contacts and positioning. Profiles who have a network, are close to project managers in London and prior experience in business development will be preferred. If business development is an area you are confident with and haven’t yet had full exposure your profile will be considered. The studio is fortunate to have forged great contacts and a strong network and an existing portfolio of work in commercial workplaces through their architecture and interior design sectors.

Design:

The design director is expected to have strong design capabilities and a portfolio to demonstrate this. The role will remain hands-on designing and drawing, suiting creatives who want to remain close to project briefs throughout all stages. The client is looking for rounded knowledge of FF+E, interior design and architecture, to be up-to-date with current trends and be a visionary design lead. Those who are able to inspire, influence clients and encourage their teams to enjoy a collaborative and supportive design process would fit this role. The studio has a flat hierarchy and freedom in design, meaning there is no house style - this is to be developed with the team. The client is looking for a profile that will drive the look, feel and creative ambition of the client's look, feel and commercial offering - suitable for profiles that have a strong sense of ownership and authorship.

Leadership and Management:

The design director will lead and manage a team - mentor, guide and nurture a happy environment for creativity. The studio is looking for good communicators who are able to create a safe environment where design can be critiqued and team members can be empowered. You will be required to lead by example and put in the best processes. You will be required to build and grow the team, reporting to the managing director.

The studio is keen to find a grounded individual who has ambition, drive and humility. Preferred characteristics are designers who are diligent, accurate, and organised and those who are comfortable with clients, PM's.

Demonstrable experience should include at least 8-10 years in commercial workplace projects. The client would like to see rounded profiles, experience running projects across all stages and have a clear understanding of the deliverables and financial accountability.

Working 4 days in the office/1 day wfh
